Are you a procrastinator?
We all put off doing things sometimes, and delay or postpone taking action when we should. It’s part of human nature, and often, it’s no big deal. But if you’re a writer who procrastinates, you’re only hurting yourself.
There are many reasons why writers procrastinate. Maybe you’re really bad at managing your time. Maybe you’re easily distracted. Some writers struggle with self confidence and the fear that their work isn’t good enough. Others get off track if they haven’t planned their story out properly. Unfortunately, there are many reasons that can lead someone to procrastinate with their writing!
Luckily, there are some steps you can take to get back on track. Here are a few suggestions that can help:
• Join a writer’s group. One of the many benefits about being a member of a writer’s group is that it forces accountability. If you have a weekly meeting and your fellow writers are expecting to review your latest draft, well, you better get that draft done. The knowledge that you’ll be receiving helpful feedback in a supportive setting can help drive you to finish your work in a timely manner.
• Find a time management method that works for you. Maybe you will choose to get up early and write for one hour before heading to your day job. It works for exercise workouts, and it can work for writing! Having time scheduled and set aside is really important, because we all know how busy life can get.
• Get rid of as many distractions as possible. It’s hard to get into a good writing groove if you keep being interrupted by your children or roommates. Or if your phone is constantly buzzing with new texts. Or if you’re tempted to log onto your social media accounts. Lock the door, go somewhere less noisy, turn the ringer off on your phone, close all other browser windows. You get the idea. Create an environment where you’ll be able to focus.
When it comes to procrastination, you have to work smarter, not harder. And when you’re back on track, you’re one step closer to meeting your writing goals!
